Boekhoorn, O.S. (2014). The influence of Dutch elite sport events and Dutch royal family events on national pride in Dutch (social) media analyzed: a time-series analysis for the period 2006-2012. Amsterdam: Universiteit van Amsterdam.

National pride has recently become the topic of discussion due to its positive and negative consequences. In the Netherlands, the topic became of even more importance due to the change of rule in 2013. While consequences of messages concerning national pride are often researched, causes of articles and social media messages on national pride of modern western societies like the Netherlands is lacking. This study gives an insight in the effect of Dutch royal family events and Dutch elite sport events on the difference in amount of articles and messages presented in Dutch (social) media. In addition, the difference in degree of national pride presented in newspaper articles and social media is revealed. By looking at articles from three Dutch newspapers and messages on the social medium Twitter during the period 2006-2012, Dutch royal family events are revealed as a partial cause of national pride in the Dutch media. Finally, this study shows that only Tweets of a month earlier can predict tweets of the current month. A manual content analysis and time series analysis were used to uncover these conclusions.
