Parental involvement is seen as an important precondition for children to participate in, and to enjoy sports. Previous research has showed that parents and children have different perspectives with respect to parental involvement. This study is aimed to provide insight into the possible differences between the experiences and expectations of parents and children regarding parental involvement for Dutch children aged 9-16, by conducting in-depth interviews with parents and children in water polo and gymnastics. Parental involvement was operationalized in logistical, emotional and informational involvement. Results showed that parents and children experienced emotional involvement as the most important aspect of parental involvement, which had the biggest influence on enjoying sports. Furthermore, parents and children took logistical involvement for granted. Finally, children experienced the informational involvement by parents as helpful. A national campaign is recommended to inform parents and sports clubs about the importance of parental involvement on children's enjoyment of sports.
