Outdoor recreation and the urban environment
Williams, S. (1995). Outdoor recreation and the urban environment. London: Routledge.
In the last few decades, the provision for leisure in urban areas has increased significantly. Changes in working practices and urban lifestyles have meant people have more time for leisure than ever before. The question is how well the recent growth of outdoor recreation has been accommodated in a rapidly changing environment and how the future can be shaped for outdoor recreation in towns and cities. These are the issues the author addresses in this publication. He looks at how people interact with the resources currently available and offers a critical review of the policies through which recreational opportunities in towns and cities are currently being developed. He calls for a more flexible approach to the way in which the urban environment is evaluated, developed and managed. A range of urban areas are discussed from public open spaces to seldom covered areas such as private gardens and the street.
