Leisure in society
a network structural perspective
Stokowski, P.A. (1994). Leisure in society: a network structural perspective. London: Mansell Publishing Limited.
This volume considers sociological aspects of leisure by focusing on two questions: what does leisure mean to people in the context of their daily lives? And what does leisure mean to societies in the broader organizational context of communities and institutions? These questions are related to the extent that individual behavior and choices are the visible elements of larger social structures that overlie group boundaries. Researchers must consider whether, and to what extent, leisure involves coordinated social action, and whether the consequences of such action have individual and social importance. This volume evaluates and challenges familiar approaches and conceptualizations in an effort to develop a more firmly grounded sociology of leisure. Basic approaches to a structural sociology of leisure are described and illustrated with examples from published research literature. An alternative network structural perspective is then presented, discussed and evaluated. It should be noted that analysis of social structural aspects of leisure is a relatively new area of research, and this volume should be considered a preliminary formalization of the subject. The first part introduces the theoretical basis of social networks research (analyses of relationships between people, and in socially constructed groups and communities) and presents methodological considerations. This is followed by an overview of networks research in tourism, leisure and recreation, including several examples. The final section considers the implications and consequences of using the networks approach in understanding leisure/ social interactions.
