...Be yo' health...

about the meaning of a healthy lifestyle and sports within hip hop culture and about a comparison between Q-methodology and Likert scale questionnaires

Tomas, K. (2012). ...Be yo' health...: about the meaning of a healthy lifestyle and sports within hip hop culture and about a comparison between Q-methodology and Likert scale questionnaires. Wageningen: Wageningen University (WUR).

The concern of many people is that children nowadays often do not live the healthy lifestyles they need in order to live a long and healthy live. This belief entails that health can be managed and it forms a part of the general 'healthism' discourse which is the dominant health discourse in Western countries. From an early age children appear to know what is healthy and what not, but as children get older there seems to be a gap between knowledge and behaviour. As children age, the influence of peers and youth cultures increases. The aim of the study was specifically focused on adolescents who felt affiliated with hip hop youth culture and the meaning that they attached to a healthy lifestyle and sports. Also a methodological aim was formulated in order to gain insight in the differences between the responses that are given by respondents in questionnaires compared to Q-sorts.
