a study of the role of the Olympic Games in the regeneration of Barcelona and Manchester

Griffiths, A. (1995). Who needs the Olympics?: a study of the role of the Olympic Games in the regeneration of Barcelona and Manchester. Brussels: Universities of Brussels, Tilburg, Deusto-Bilbao and Loughborough.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the importance of large mega-events in the regeneration of cities. The event that the athor has chosen is arguably the worlds' largest event, the Olympic Games. The cities that have been chosen are Barcelona (Spain) and Manchester (UK). The author will focus primarily upon the physical benefits of the Games, e.g., improvements in infrastructure, development of new facilities and improvements in the environment. Other aspects will also be taken into consideration, such as the economic, social and cultural impacts of the Games and the Games bid process. The author will also consider the effects on image and perception of the two cities being involved in the Olympic experience.
