Physical education, sport and schooling
studies in the sociology of physical education
Evans, J. (1986). Physical education, sport and schooling: studies in the sociology of physical education. Londen: The Falmer Press.
The contributions to this book are organized into two sections. The first deals with features of the contemporary 'conventional' physical education scene and the second with innovatory or 'alternative' practices. Although the majority of the chapters deal with physical education, mostly as it is experienced by pupils and teachers in secondary school, it is hoped that the issues raised concerning sex differentation, labelling, departmental management, the nature and quality of teaching, innovation etc., will hopefully span the boundaries of the educational subjects and stages. In the second section of the book the first three chapters concentrate attention on attempts made by teachers and lecturers in higher education to effect changes in the curriculum and teaching of physical education in schools.
