To investigate the prevalence and nature of bullying in sports clubs 177 children aged 10-12 years were investigated in three primary schools in the Netherlands. Differences in gender and sport type were taken in account during this research. A questionnaire was used to examine the children and to classify the children as perpetrator, victim, aggressive victim or not involved. 24 children were interviewed. Results showed that boys were more often classified as perpetrator. The classified role did not always match with the role children give themselves. This might be due to the definition of bullying that children use. Most perpetrators and victims occurred in semi-contact sports. According to the children, trainers handle an avoidant approach when it comes to tackle bullying. Sports clubs did not have measures to prevent bullying. Limitations in this research were e.g. the unequal distribution of respondents for each sport type. For future research it might be important to investigate the role of the trainer by interviewing the trainer instead of the children.
