Conclusions:
- The main reasons for participating in sport were for physical and mental health benefits; being in a social, supportive community; and being part of a team. Other reported reasons included opportunities for achievement, competition and travel.
- Playing sport may contribute to the experience of successful ageing for older adults.
- Sports organizations could use the reasons for participating in sport and the positive contribution of sport to successful ageing in the development and implementation of participation strategies.
